What Types of Things Can Bats Chew Through Around My Property?
If you have seen a bat before, then you know that these animals can be quite terrifying. It is not just that these animals look like flying rats, but is the fact that they have extremely sharp teeth. Coming out toward you in the middle of the night as you are out for a jog or sitting out on your porch can make even the most manly of guys scream in terror.

What All Are Those Teeth Good For?
If you have seen a lot of Hollywood movies or television shows where bats are depicted, it is those teeth that terrify most people. The movies showed dozens of these animals swarming around a cow, lion, or even a person, biting on them and devouring them. At least in Hollywood, these are terrifying animals.

It is understandable why so many would be afraid of them. Even apart from the depiction, it is those teeth that really get people terrified. They are so sharp and strong looking, and it looks like they could bite through just about anything, this may make you wonder what types of things bats can chew through around your property?

It’s Not as Bad as You Think
Before going on, it is important to understand that these animals are not as dangerous as you may think. At least not their teeth. Bats are the carriers of a number of diseases, which includes rabies. This is obviously extremely hazardous to you, but most bats are not going to come at a person. They are insectivores, eating such things as wasps, moths, and beetles. Human beings are simply not on the diet of a bat.

What differentiates bats from many other animals that have sharp teeth is the way that they maintain those teeth. For instance, rodents, which include rats, squirrels, and mice, chew on hard things to keep their teeth maintained. This is why a rat or squirrel inside your home can be extremely dangerous. They may even chew on electrical wiring because of the hard outer coating of the wiring. This could lead to a short the wiring or even a fire.

There are no worries about this with the bat, however. These animals maintain their sharp teeth through the kinds of foods that the eat. For example, bats will eat such things as beetles and grasshoppers, insects with very hard exoskeletons. By biting through these skeletal systems, they help to maintain their teeth. There is no need for them to chew on wiring.

This should give you some sense of relief that you don’t have to worry about a bat destroying your electrical wiring, foundational boards, or any other part of your house, including your furniture. There is one exception to that, however. That is if a bat is using its teeth to bite through something to gain access into your home. These animals will bite at a loose board or a gap, trying to make it bigger. This is why a routine inspection of your home is absolutely mandatory.
